India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI – India and China have long been at odds, but the escalating trade tensions with caused by the inexplicable policies of President Donald Trump, are now pushing them closer together.
In what would not have happened a few months ago, before Trump came to office, on April 8, China called on India to join forces in resisting what it described as the “U.S. abuse of tariffs,” The administration has pushed duties on Chinese imports to a total of 104 percent.
Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in India, emphasized that China remains a strong advocate for economic globalization and multilateralism, which have greatly contributed to global growth. She also reiterated China’s commitment to working with the global community to protect the multilateral trade system, with the World Trade Organization at its heart.
In a huge reversal not just of how cooperation with India, China talked about how the markets should operate. Highlighting the complementary nature of trade between India and China, Yu Jing argued that the two largest developing nations should stand united against U.S. tariff actions. She stressed that trade and tariff wars have no winners, calling for countries to oppose protectionist measures.
The European Union too has announced new trade barriers intensifying the global trade conflict that has already weighed heavily on markets and increased the risk of a global recession.
