Fake News President Trump? India Accounts For USAID Money – No Mention Of Voter Turnout

NEW DELHI – While Elon Musk and President Donald Trump have been claiming and doubling down on their statements about USAID to India being used for voter turnout, the Indian Finance Ministry’s latest report presents a different picture.
According to the ministry’s 2023-24 annual report, seven projects worth approximately $750 million are currently being implemented in partnership with USAID. However, the total funding obligated for the financial year 2023-24 stands at $97 million—none of which was allocated for voter turnout initiatives, contrary to Trump’s claims.
The report details USAID-funded projects focused on agriculture and food security, water and sanitation, renewable energy, disaster management, and health. Additional funds were directed toward sustainable forestry and climate adaptation, as well as energy efficiency and innovation projects.
The controversy began when Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced it had canceled a supposed $21 million USAID grant to India for voter turnout efforts. Trump amplified the claim, accusing the Biden administration of funding Indian elections. However, the Finance Ministry’s report is tellingly silent on such allocations.
