WASHINGTON, D.C. — After initial confusion over the arrest of a suspect in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the FBI has clarified that no one is in custody and released images of a “person of interest” as the nationwide manhunt continues.
FBI Director Kash Patel had initially suggested that a man had been detained, but later confirmed that the individual was released following questioning. Utah officials said they were coordinating with federal and local agencies and stressed that evidence — including video footage, a high-powered rifle, and forensic prints — gave them confidence the shooter would be located.
The reversal followed a tense day in Utah, where Patel’s tweets announcing an arrest were quickly contradicted by official statements, leaving uncertainty and anxiety among citizens already shaken by the high-profile attack.
Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. He was the founder of Turning Point USA, the nation’s most influential conservative student organization, which he built from a start-up in 2012 into a youth movement with more than 800 campus chapters.
A close ally of President Donald Trump, Kirk was both a political strategist and a trusted confidant of the Trump family, amplifying the former president’s message among Gen Z and millennial conservatives.
In a social media statement, Trump expressed grief over Kirk’s death, directly blaming the “radical left” for the killing. He accused critics of dehumanizing Kirk by comparing him and others to “Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals.”
“He’s a martyr for truth and freedom, and there has never been anyone so respected by youth,” Trump said. “Charlie was also a man of deep faith, and we take comfort in knowing he is now at peace with God in heaven.”
Kirk’s death has intensified concerns about the rising tide of political violence in the United States. While citizens mourn and worry about safety at public events, Trump has emphasized partisan blame. In a video statement, he doubled down on his accusations, saying, “Those on the radical left have compared wonderful Americans like Charlie to Nazis and the world’s worst mass murderers and criminals. This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible for the terrorism we are seeing in our country today, and it must stop right now.”
Trump has ordered flags lowered to half-mast and pledged to award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously. (IANS)
