Film ‘Hotel, Motel & Patel’ Draws On Patel Motel History
India-West News Desk
LOS ANGELES, CA – Filmmaker Mitesh Patel has announced his upcoming feature film ‘Hotel, Motel & Patel’, a comedy-drama inspired by the Indian American presence in the U.S. hospitality industry and the history of the “Patel Motel” phenomenon.
The film draws from the origins of Gujarati immigrant participation in the motel business, tracing back to the 1940s when entrepreneur Kanji Manchhu Desai leased a hotel in California. Over time, Indian-origin families came to own a significant share of budget motels across the United States.
Set in the present day, the story follows an Indian immigrant family that arrives in the United States seeking opportunity but ends up managing a struggling motel. The narrative focuses on cultural adjustments, family dynamics, and the challenges of building a life in a new country.
Television actor Krishna Bharadwaj, known for his lead role in the series ‘Tenali Rama’, will play the lead. The creative team includes writer Pankaj Trivedi, whose credits include ‘Apna Sapna Money Money’, along with composer Smitt Jay and lyricist Vinay Dave. Rakesh “Rocky” Shah has joined the project as associate producer.
Patel, who previously worked in the hospitality sector after moving to North America before transitioning into filmmaking, said the story draws from personal experience and broader immigrant narratives.
The film is currently in pre-production, with casting underway in both the United States and India. Filming is scheduled to begin between July and August 2026 across multiple locations in the United States.
The production is being developed with a focus on reflecting the experiences of immigrant families in the hospitality sector. Additional casting and production updates are expected to be announced in the coming months.
