Former Intel Chief Warns Against Kash Patel Leading FBI, Citing Bias

WASHINGTON, DC – William Webster, the only individual to have led both the FBI and CIA, has expressed serious concerns about the qualifications of President-elect Donald Trump’s nominees for top intelligence positions.

In a December 26 letter to senators, Webster criticized Kash Patel, nominated for FBI director, and Tulsi Gabbard, chosen for Director of National Intelligence, arguing that neither meets the demands of their respective roles.

Webster, who served as FBI director from 1978 to 1987 under Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, and as CIA director from 1987 to 1991 under Reagan and President George H.W. Bush underscored the importance of nonpartisan leadership in these roles.

Webster, 100 years old, praised Patel’s patriotism but questioned his allegiance to the rule of law. “His record of executing the president’s directives suggests a loyalty to individuals rather than the rule of law — a dangerous precedent for an agency tasked with impartial enforcement of justice,” he wrote.

On Gabbard, Webster highlighted her lack of intelligence experience, calling it a stark contrast to the seasoned leadership required for the role. “Effective management of our intelligence community requires unparalleled expertise to navigate the complexities of global threats and to maintain the trust of allied nations,” Webster stated. “Without that trust, our ability to safeguard sensitive secrets and collaborate internationally is severely diminished.”

“I urge you to weigh the critical importance of nonpartisan leadership and experience,” Webster concluded. “The safety of the American people — and your own families — depends on it.”
