WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department of State will significantly restrict eligibility for non-immigrant visa interview waivers starting September 2.

This updated policy will generally require most applicants, including children under 14 and seniors over 79 who previously qualified for automatic exemptions, to attend in-person interviews at U.S. consulates. This change supersedes the previous waiver policy issued on February 18, 2025.

Only a limited number of categories will continue to qualify for interview waivers. These include individuals applying under  A-1, A-2, C-3 G-1 to G-4, NATO-1 through NATO-6, and TECRO E-1. Applicants seeking diplomatic or official visas are also exempt from the in-person interview requirement.

A narrow exception also applies to individuals renewing a full-validity B-1, B-2, or B1/B2 visa, or a Border Crossing Card/Foil for Mexican nationals, provided the renewal occurs within 12 months of the prior visa’s expiration. To be eligible for this specific waiver, applicants must meet strict criteria: they must apply from their country of nationality or residence, have never been refused a visa (unless the refusal was formally waived or overturned), and have no apparent or potential ineligibility.

Despite meeting any of these waiver standards, consular officers retain full discretion to request an in-person interview for any reason on a case-by-case basis.
