Huge Ganesh Festival Brings Culture And Tradition To Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA, PA- About 2,000 devotees and community members from the Greater Philadelphia area and neighboring states participated in the Philadelphia Ganesh Festival procession and celebrations at Bharatiya Temple this year.

The 11-day festival began September 14, with religious ceremonies, prayers, devotional activities, cultural programs and Maha Prasad.

A highlight of the opening day was “Krishna… Ek Anokha Nrityavishkar,” a classical dance-drama presented by Guru Sonia Parchure and her group. The production portrayed the life and spiritual journey of Lord Krishna through Kathak, abhinaya, music, choreography and storytelling.

Another cultural program was presented on September 15 as part of the celebrations.

Expanded parking facilities at Bharatiya Temple this year have enabled the temple to accommodate a larger number of devotees and visitors, according to the festival organizers.

Dr. Ravi Murarka, a longtime member of the Greater Philadelphia community, said festivals such as the Ganesh celebration provide families with an opportunity to introduce younger generations to Indian traditions and cultural heritage.
