WASHINGTON, DC – As Diwali shines light on celebrations worldwide, Indian American members of Congress are marking the Festival of Lights with messages of unity, freedom, and civic responsibility.

Representative Pramila Jayapal, the first South Asian American woman elected to Congress, shared her love for Diwali’s symbolism, noting, “Diwali has always been one of my favorite celebrations. It is a reminder that light triumphs over darkness and that freedom and righteousness will always prevail.”

Proud of her heritage and the growing South Asian American community, Jayapal emphasized the importance of using every voice—and vote—responsibly to protect democracy, stating, “Our voices are our votes! South Asian American voters are the margin of victory in many states. Choose responsibly and let’s keep working to protect our democracy!”

Michigan Congressman Shri Thanedar reflected on the festival’s symbolism, connecting it to his own work in Congress. “Just as Diwali honors the diversity of India’s vibrant regions and communities,” he noted, “my role in Congress reminds me of the strength in our nation’s diversity and the richness that each culture, tradition, and faith adds to the American tapestry.”

Thanedar, who represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, has become a voice for diverse communities, championing inclusivity and the value of immigrant contributions.

Meanwhile, Congressman Ro Khanna of California’s 17th District, another key Indian American voice in the House, extended Diwali wishes with gratitude. “It is a day for celebrating the triumph of light over darkness and goodness over evil,” Khanna shared, sending best wishes to his constituents and beyond. Known for his work on technology and economic equality, Khanna underscored the importance of compassion and gratitude, hoping the holiday brings blessings of family and health to all who celebrate.
