India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI – Denmark has retained its position as the least corrupt country in the world for the second year in a row, according to Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). Finland, Singapore, and New Zealand follow closely behind.
For India, the report shows a decline, with the country dropping from 93rd to 96th place, earning a score of 38 out of 100. The CPI ranks 180 countries based on perceptions of public sector corruption, with scores ranging from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean). Denmark, with a score of 90, is well ahead, while the global average remained at 43, with over two-thirds of countries scoring below 50.
In South Asia, India’s neighbors fare worse, with Pakistan ranking 135th, Sri Lanka 121st, and Bangladesh 149th. China, however, performed better than its regional counterparts, securing the 76th spot.
Among Western nations, the United States saw a decline, dropping from 24th to 28th place, with its score decreasing from 69 to 65. France and Germany also experienced setbacks, with Germany now ranking 15th, tied with Canada.
At the bottom of the index, South Sudan and Somalia remained the most corrupt countries, scoring just 8 and 9, respectively. Venezuela and Syria also ranked among the worst, with scores of 10 and 12.
