LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has unanimously and officially proclaimed August 15, 2025, as “India Independence Day.”
The motion, brought forward by Supervisor Janice Hahn, was approved August 12 to commemorate the 79th anniversary of India’s independence from British rule.
The proclamation recognizes the significant contributions of the Indian American community, which has become an integral part of Los Angeles County’s diverse population.
“Our Indian American community is an integral part of the fabric of LA County,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “I am so proud to represent this large and growing community, and join them in celebrating almost eight decades of independence for a rising, vibrant India.”
With over 98,000 residents, the Indian population is one of the fastest-growing South Asian groups in the region. Hahn’s district includes the City of Artesia, which is home to the area’s prominent “Little India” with its concentration of Indian-owned businesses and organizations.
The county’s recognition of the community extends to other events as well; in 2022, Supervisor Hahn led the effort for the county’s first-ever official recognition of Diwali, the Festival of Lights.
