MUMBAI – India is expected to achieve record production levels of both rice and wheat in the year ending June 2025, according to the farm ministry. Rice output is projected to reach 149 million metric tons, up from 137.8 million tons last year, while wheat production is forecast to hit 117.5 million tons—an increase from 113.3 million tons in 2024.

India, the world’s largest rice exporter and second-largest wheat producer after China, is also poised to boost rice exports thanks to the anticipated record harvest—strengthening its role in the global food supply chain.

These bumper harvests are set to drive India’s total food grain output to an all-time high of 354 million metric tons, significantly higher than last year’s 332.3 million tons.

The ministry attributed the rise in wheat production to higher market prices, which encouraged farmers to expand cultivation using high-yield seed varieties. The latest estimate is also a revision upward from the ministry’s March forecast of 115.4 million tons.

A strong wheat harvest is already replenishing domestic stocks rapidly, easing concerns about potential imports and countering earlier speculation in global markets. With ample supplies, India is expected to meet domestic wheat demand entirely through local production this year, helping to stabilize global wheat prices.
