NEW DELHI — External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds on September 8, holding talks on the future of India–US relations and avenues for greater economic cooperation.
Sharing photographs of the meeting on social media, Jaishankar said their conversation centered on strengthening bilateral economic ties. “Discussed India-US economic ties and its potential,” he posted.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of rising trade tensions. President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, while his administration officials have made a series of sharp remarks critical of New Delhi.
Trump has warned that Washington had yet to roll out “Phase-2” and “Phase-3” tariffs targeting countries that continue trade with Russia. He described potential secondary sanctions on India as a way to strike directly at Moscow, arguing that such measures would cost Russia “hundreds of billions of dollars.”
