Jaishankar Flags India’s Concerns Over Russia Oil Tariff Law To Rubio

NEW YORK, NY- External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised India’s concerns over the US legislation authorizing tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from certain countries that buy Russian oil and gas during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on September 23.

Jaishankar wrote on X after the meeting that he “reiterated India’s interests and concerns with regard to SRIA”, the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.

If implemented against India, the tariffs could affect Indian exports to the US and add another complication to the trade agreement being negotiated by the two countries.

India is among the major buyers of Russian oil and could therefore be affected by the new US tariff authority.

US President Donald Trump had earlier imposed a 25 per cent tariff on India over its purchase of Russian oil, but rescinded it in February.

Rubio, in his X post about the meeting, did not mention SRIA.

“Together, we are building on the US-India strategic partnership and coordinating on key regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts,” he posted.

Jaishankar said the two sides also “discussed the Gulf and Ukraine situations”.

The meeting came amid disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz following the Israel-US attack on Iran, which have affected shipping and had a significant impact on India, a major importer of oil from the Gulf region.

The meeting with Rubio was among a series of high-level engagements Jaishankar has held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s high-level week, with world leaders and senior diplomats gathered in New York. (IANS)
