SEATTLE, WA – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, the ranking member of the Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement Subcommittee, has secured $4,039,516 in federal funding to aid migrants in King County. The funds, allocated to the Washington State Department of Social & Health Services, come from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through FEMA and US Customs and Border Protection.

Washington State has a strong tradition of welcoming immigrants, and this funding aims to continue that legacy. “I am proud to have worked with the Washington delegation to advocate for and secure this much-needed funding,” Jayapal said. “This federal investment will support state and local governments, as well as community and non-profit partners, in providing essential services to migrants, particularly those from the Congo and Venezuela. Seeking asylum is a right, and all individuals must be able to do so with dignity.”

The funding will be used to assist local communities in Washington State that have been providing critical resources to migrants, including food, shelter, clothing, acute medical care, and transportation. These resources are vital for individuals who have recently arrived and are awaiting their immigration court proceedings.

Jayapal has been a vocal advocate for increasing support for asylum seekers. In June, she signed a letter of support for this grant and, in November 2023, joined a call to expand Shelter and Services Program funds to additional entities. Earlier this year, in January, she visited Riverton Park United Methodist Church, which has been instrumental in offering emergency shelter and services to asylum seekers. During her visit, she met with community organizations, volunteers, advocates, and migrants to discuss the urgent need for federal investments in supporting these efforts.
