Mindy Kaling’s Running Point Brings Lakers-Inspired Drama To Netflix

LOS ANGELES, CA – Mindy Kaling is bringing the high-stakes world of professional basketball to Netflix with Running Point, a new comedy series inspired by the Los Angeles Lakers’ front office. The 10-episode show, set to premiere on February 27, stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, a woman unexpectedly thrust into leadership when she takes over as president of the fictional Los Angeles Waves after her brother resigns amid scandal.
Created by Kaling, the series explores Isla’s struggle to prove herself in a male-dominated industry, facing skepticism from her family and the sports world.
The storyline reflects the real-life challenges of women in professional sports management, with direct ties to the Lakers organization. Lakers president and co-owner Jeanie Buss and the team’s manager of special projects Linda Rambis serve as executive producers, alongside Kaling, Hudson, and Howard Klein. Jordan Rambis is also a producer.
