CANNES (ANI)– Neeraj Ghaywan’s latest feature Homebound received a nearly nine-minute standing ovation at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 21, marking a significant moment for Indian cinema on the global stage.
Starring Ishaan Khatter, Janhvi Kapoor, and Vishal Jethwa, the film premiered in the Un Certain Regard section. The emotional response from the audience left the cast and crew visibly moved. Ghaywan was seen embracing producer Karan Johar following the screening, while Khatter also appeared emotional.
Homebound tells the story of two childhood friends from a North Indian village who aspire to become police officers. As they come closer to achieving their dream, their friendship is tested. Ghaywan describes the film as a personal story centered on themes of friendship, dignity, and the struggles of marginalized communities.
The film also drew attention for having legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese on board as executive producer.
Scorsese, who previously praised Ghaywan’s debut Masaan (2015), called Homebound “a beautifully crafted film” and commended its selection at Cannes.
