NORWICH, CT — Swaranjit Singh Khalsa made history November 4 as he became the first Sikh elected mayor in Connecticut.
In a city where only about 10 Sikh families reside, Khalsa’s election was powered by a broad and diverse coalition of voters who saw in him a voice for unity, representation, and progress. The 40-year-old Democrat, who previously served on the Norwich City Council, defeated Republican Tracy Gould and independent candidate Marcia Wilbur to win the top post.
Khalsa’s rise from immigrant student to mayor reflects Norwich’s changing political and social landscape. Born and raised in Jalandhar, he came to the United States on a student visa after completing his engineering studies at DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology. After earning a master’s degree in computer engineering, he settled in Norwich and launched a local construction business that deepened his ties to the community.
Elected to the city council in 2021, Khalsa became a visible advocate for diversity, interfaith dialogue, and civic engagement.
