Once A Rising Star, Now Rejected by Both Sides: KP George’s Political Travails
India-West News Desk
FORT BEND COUNTY, TX— Once hailed as a trailblazer, KP George made history in 2018 when he became the first Indian American elected as Fort Bend County Judge. But seven years later, his political fortunes have shifted dramatically. Neither the Democratic Party he long belonged to nor the Republican Party he now seeks refuge in seem eager to claim him.
George has now announced that he is officially switching parties and will seek re-election in 2026 as a Republican. But within hours, the Texas GOP publicly distanced itself, issuing a blistering statement rejecting his candidacy and accusing him of attempting to “hijack our Party’s good name to escape the consequences of his actions.”
George’s defection comes as he faces mounting legal pressure, including a misdemeanor indictment and past felony allegations tied to a money laundering probe. While he has called the charges a “political witch hunt,” both major parties have been critical. Local Democrats have demanded his resignation, and Republicans have dismissed his sudden embrace of their platform as opportunistic.
In a defiant press conference, George cast his decision as a moral realignment.
“Today, I’m making an all-important announcement that I am officially joining the Republican Party,” he said. “The Democratic Party has become one of corrupt and radical political ideology and positions that simply do not reflect the values of Fort Bend County families.”
But Republican leaders weren’t convinced. “KP George has never supported our platform, principles or priorities,” said Texas GOP Chair Abraham George. “We are not going to stand by while someone tries to rebrand themselves as a Republican just to dodge accountability.”
Born in Kerala, George immigrated to the U.S. in 1993, working in finance in New York before settling in Texas.
