SAN JOSE, CA – The California Theatre is set to witness a unique cultural intersection this month as Opera San José prepares to close its 2025–26 season with a bold new staging of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’. Running from April 19 to May 3, this production of the 1853 classic promises a fresh perspective on Parisian high society, reimagined through a lens that will resonate with the South Asian diaspora.
Under the direction of Tara Branham, the company’s first Artist-in-Residence, the production pivots away from traditional tropes to scrutinize the rigid social structures. In a move that bridges European operatic tradition with Indian classical heritage, the production features Kathak-inspired choreography by the renowned Antara Bhardwaj.
This South Asian influence will take center stage during Flora’s Act II party, offering a vibrant, rhythmic departure from conventional stagings and highlighting the global reach of the San Jose arts scene.
Opera San José General Director and CEO Shawna Lucey noted that the inclusion of such diverse artistic voices ensures the season ends on a high note of both grandeur and romanticism, characterizing the final result as emotionally shattering and magnificent.
The production serves as a significant milestone for several artists, marking the principal conducting debut of former Artist-in-Residence Johannes Löhner. The stage will feature Canadian soprano Mikayla Sager in the demanding role of Violetta, performing alongside tenor WooYoung Yoon as Alfredo and baritone Kidon Choi as Germont. The supporting cast is rounded out by Joanne Evans as Flora and Nicole Koh as Annina.
Based on ‘La Dame aux Camélias’ by Alexandre Dumas fils, ‘La Traviata’ remains one of the most enduring works in the operatic canon.
