NEW DELHI — Italian luxury fashion house Prada has publicly recognized the Indian heritage behind a new sandal design that stirred controversy for its striking resemblance to traditional Kolhapuri footwear. The acknowledgment follows mounting criticism from Indian artisans, politicians, and media outlets after the design debuted at Milan Fashion Week.

The open-toe leather sandals, showcased on Prada’s runway, features braided detailing reminiscent of the iconic Kolhapuri chappal — a handcrafted slipper style that originated in the city of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, and dates back to the 12th century.

The backlash centered on Prada’s initial failure to credit the source of inspiration. Lawmakers and cultural advocates in India condemned what they saw as a glaring oversight by a global brand profiting from traditional Indian craftsmanship without recognition.

Lorenzo Bertelli, head of corporate social responsibility at Prada and son of the brand’s owners, issued a formal letter to the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce. “We acknowledge that the sandals… are inspired by traditional Indian handcrafted footwear, with a centuries-old heritage,” Bertelli wrote. He added that the design remains in early development and may not reach the market but emphasized the brand’s openness to engaging with Indian artisans for a “meaningful exchange” and indicated plans for further discussions.

While Prada’s men’s sandals retail at $844 and up, Kolhapuris remain widely available in Indian markets for as little as $12.
