Ranbir Planning Raj Kapoor Festival To Celebrate Grandpa
India-West News Desk
MUMBAI – Ranbir Kapoor is set to celebrate the cinematic legacy of his grandfather, the legendary Raj Kapoor, with a special film festival showcasing his iconic works. Scheduled from December 13 to 15, the festival aims to introduce Raj Kapoor’s timeless films to a new generation, ensuring his contributions to Indian cinema are remembered. Ranbir, alongside the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), his uncle Kunal Kapoor, and the Film Heritage Foundation, has been working to restore and preserve his grandfather’s films.
“We have restored 10 films so far, and there’s much more to be done,” Ranbir shared, emphasizing the importance of making Raj Kapoor’s films accessible to younger audiences. He explained that many people, especially the youth, may not be familiar with the work of legends like his grandfather. “I remember the first time I met Alia Bhatt, she asked me, ‘Who is Kishore Kumar?’ It’s just the circle of life. People get forgotten, and new artists come in. So, it’s crucial that we remember our roots,” he added.
The festival will give fans and movie lovers a chance to experience the grandeur of Raj Kapoor’s filmmaking, an effort that Ranbir believes is vital to preserving India’s rich film history.
In addition to his grandfather’s tribute, Ranbir recently discussed his upcoming collaboration with Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Love And War, a project that has excited fans due to its star-studded cast, including Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal. This marks the first time in 17 years that Ranbir will reunite with Bhansali, with whom he made his debut in the 2007 film Saawariya. At the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Ranbir shared how Bhansali, whom he considers a mentor, shaped his career. “He is my godfather. Everything I know about films, everything I know about acting, I learned from him,” Ranbir said, also praising Bhansali’s unwavering dedication to his craft.
Through these personal projects and his ongoing work in cinema, Ranbir continues to honor both his family’s legacy and the artistic mentors who have shaped his journey.
