OLYMPIA, WA – The Washington State Senate passed a resolution on February 21 honoring the contributions of Sikh Americans to the culture and history of the state and the country.
The measure was sponsored by Sen. Manka Dhingra (D-Redmond), the first Sikh American elected to a state legislature in American history, who spoke about how Sikh values have inspired her and many others to public service.
“Every year, this resolution is a joyful opportunity for the Sikh community of Washington to gather in Olympia, and for this body to remember the contributions of so many Sikh Americans to our state,” said Dhingra.
“We are a community that is deeply rooted in the ideas of truth and service to community. And that all that we do is done with humility. This is a religion that was talking about equality among humans back in the 15th century, especially gender equality.”
The Senate also recognized members of the Sikh community in attendance, including Hira Singh, Sunny Singh, Puneet Kaur, and staff of the Sikh Coalition and the Washington Sikh Community
The session was opened with a prayer by Sikh youth leader Sharn Kaur of the Khalsa Gurmat Center.

This news is about Sikh Americans, not Khalistanis, and is about USA, not India. I am a Hindu American but I don’t like to demonize all Sikh Americans, even though some of them may be supportive of Khalistanis.

Sikhs all over the world are known for their selfless service to the community, which is deeply appreciated by the community as well as the nation where they reside. Hindu temples need to do more of the same.
Best of all, Sikhs rarely, if ever, resort to begging. “For a true Sikh who walks on the path of Dharam (righteousness), it is not permitted to wander around begging from others; the Guru tells us: “Those who walk in the Will of the True Guru, never wander begging (2)” (SGGS p 729).” (sikhiwiki.org)

We Hindus are proud of our Sikh brothers and sisters who are following the dharma and selfless service with humility. India had been invaded and ruled by Mughals and then Britishers. When the rulers were Mughals, they were barbaric towards Hindus. Hindu women were not safe. So Guru Nanak ji started the movement and Hindu families eldest son became Sikh who followed the guru’s teachings to protect family, community and the nation. We still have families in India who still have the eldest son Sikh and rest of the family mona. Gurubani has Lord Rama throughout also is a testament that we all are Hindus first and adapted to Sikhism.
