WASHINGTON, DC – White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller issued a forceful statement on social media, urging Americans to join what he described as a patriotic mission to safeguard the nation’s immigration system.

“Calling all patriots. USCIS is now hiring HOMELAND DEFENDERS,” Miller wrote on X. “Your job will be to interview applicants for green cards, work visas and citizenship for approval or denial. Great pay, flexible hours, stay local. Sign up to be a Homeland Defender today!”

Miller amplified a recruitment post from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that carried a quote from President Calvin Coolidge: “Those who do not want to be partakers of the American spirit ought not to settle in America.” The post framed the job as a call to “protect your homeland and defend your culture.”

The DHS announcement describes immigration officer roles at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) as central to the “critical mission of protecting America from those who seek to exploit our immigration system.” It also points to past USCIS casework supporting federal investigations of what it termed “criminal aliens.”

Miller’s online push coincides with the rollout of stricter requirements for green card holders applying for naturalization, set to take effect October 20. Among the changes:

  • A broadened civics test measuring knowledge of U.S. history and government.
  • Expanded background checks on applicants.
  • A sharper emphasis on evaluating “good moral character,” not only in terms of avoiding crimes but also in demonstrating positive contributions to American society.

Officials have said that, in some cases, USCIS may even conduct “neighborhood investigations” to assess an applicant’s reputation and community ties.
