Suhas Subramanyam Sworn Into 119th Congress

WASHINGTON DC – Suhas Subramanyam has been sworn into the 119th Congress, marking a historic milestone for both Virginia and the East Coast. Subramanyam, elected to represent Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, made history as the first Indian American and South Asian member of Congress in Virginia’s history.

For Subramanyam, the moment was especially poignant. His mother, who immigrated through Dulles Airport—located in the district, was there to witness her son’s swearing-in ceremony on January 3.

She watched Subramanyam take the oath of office with his hand on the Bhagavad Gita.

Subramanyam shared an emotional message: “Today my parents got to see me sworn in as the first Indian American and South Asian Congressman from Virginia. If you had told my mother when she landed in Dulles Airport from India that her son would go on to represent Virginia in the United States Congress, she might have not believed you, but my story is the kind of promise that America holds. I am honored to be the first, but not the last, as I represent Virginia’s 10th in Congress.”

Before arriving in Washington, Subramanyam built a strong record of public service. A former Policy Advisor to President Barack Obama, he has served in the Virginia General Assembly since 2019. During his time in Richmond, Subramanyam was instrumental in founding the bipartisan “Commonwealth Caucus,” a group of legislators focused on bridging divides to find common ground. He also passed key legislation aimed at lowering toll costs for commuters, issuing refunds to overcharged consumers, combating gun violence, and ensuring every student in Virginia has access to a quality education.

Subramanyam’s record of service also includes his time as a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Loudoun County. He currently resides in Ashburn, Virginia, with his wife, Miranda, and their two young daughters, Maya, 4, and Nina, 3.

Virginia’s 10th District includes parts of Loudoun, Rappahannock, Fauquier, Prince William, and Fairfax Counties.
