WASHINGTON, DC – Pakistan is playing a key mediating role between the United States and Iran, with Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir traveling to Tehran shortly after speaking with President Donald Trump about Iran, CNN reported.

The previously unreported call took place shortly before Munir’s August 24 visit to Tehran, where he met with Iranian officials.

Pakistan has sought to mediate between Washington and Tehran while continuing to maintain its trade ties with Iran.

Its role contrasts with India which has sought closer alignment with Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Munir’s visit comes as tensions between Iran and the US remain high and Washington threatens major economic sanctions against Iran and its trading partners.

  • Brigadier General Asim Munir is doing a commendable job trying to bring peace in the Middle East! In some respects he is emerging as the First Statesman from the Indian Subcontinent and let’s hope he will bring peace between India and Pakistan!
