Two Rutgers Graduates Killed In New York Subway Incident

NEW YORK, NY – A woman dove onto a New York City subway track in an attempt to save a friend who had fallen onto the tracks, but both were killed by an oncoming train that could not stop in time, according to police.

The tragedy, captured on video, happened early September 13 morning at a Manhattan subway station while the two friends were waiting for a train, police said.

Navam Kaul, 24,  ended up on the track, and Malaika Chitre, also 24, tried to save him, but both were struck and killed, authorities said.

The New York Police Department said September 14 that detectives were investigating the incident. The train operator told supervisors that after spotting the two on the track, there was no time to stop the train, the New York Post reported, citing sources.

Kaul and Chitre, grew up in nearby towns in New Jersey and both graduated from Rutgers University in 2024.

Rajnikant Pipalia, whose son was a friend of Kaul, said Kaul’s family immigrated from Nepal.

Kaul and Chitre “grew up in the same world” and were part of the “same South Asian group hanging out together, enjoying the same festivals,” Pipalia said.

The Post reported that members of Chitre’s family criticized media reports about the incident, saying some accounts included sensational speculation about the two and the tragedy without factual basis.

Chitre was pursuing a doctorate in pharmacy at Temple University while working as a quality operations specialist at Acadia Pharmaceuticals.

Kaul, who held a business degree, worked as a data analyst at Bloomberg, a financial services and news company. (IANS)
