US Mobilizes Relief For Nepal

WASHINGTON, D.C.-The United States is deploying a disaster response adviser to Nepal and providing $500,000 in emergency assistance after devastating flash floods in the country’s Rasuwa district killed several people and caused widespread destruction.

The US State Department announced the assistance on August 26 as the United Nations mobilized supplies and personnel to support the Nepal government-led response.

The department said it was closely monitoring conditions in the flood-hit region and that the disaster response adviser would support relief operations on the ground.

The $500,000 in assistance will be provided through the State Department’s global award with Catholic Relief Services. The funding will support emergency shelter and distribution of relief supplies, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene assistance for communities affected by the flooding.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu is working with local authorities to locate and assist American citizens in the affected areas, the State Department said.

Americans in the affected areas have also been advised to monitor local news and follow instructions issued by local authorities. (IANS)
