JAIPUR, INDIA – A US woman was reportedly deceived by a jewelry shop owner in Rajasthan after purchasing jewels worth Rs 6 crore, only to discover they were fake and valued at just Rs 300.
According to police, the victim, identified as Cherish, bought silver jewelry with gold polish from a shop in Johri Bazar, Jaipur. The ornaments were revealed to be counterfeit when she displayed them at an exhibition in the US in April this year, as reported by the Business Standard.
Cherish subsequently traveled to India to confront Gaurav Soni, the shop owner. After he denied the allegations, she filed a police complaint and sought assistance from the US embassy.
The Jaipur Police have initiated an investigation and are searching for Gaurav Soni and his father, Rajendra Soni, who have gone into hiding. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Bajrang Singh Shekhawat reported that a man named Nand Kishore, who allegedly issued a fake certificate of authenticity to Cherish, has been arrested.
Additional reports suggest that Cherish met Gaurav on Instagram in 2022. Over the past two years, she paid Rs 6 crore for the artificial ornaments, believing them to be genuine.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to locate the suspects and uncover more details about the alleged scam.
