NEW DELHI: Amidst heightened discussions on national security following the Pahalgam attack and ongoing border tensions, Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur has bravely recounted the tragic loss of her father, Major Bhupinder Singh, who was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Kashmir in 1994.
In a resurfaced interview with Bombay Times, the Sky Force actress opened up about the devastating incident. Major Bhupinder Singh, an army engineer, was stationed in Verinag, Kashmir, a region not considered a family posting at the time. Nimrat Kaur and her family were in Patiala for winter vacation when they visited him in January 1994.
“He was a young army major, an engineer posted on the border roads of the army in a place called Verinag,” Nimrat Kaur shared. “We were on our winter vacation in January 1994 and visiting our father in Kashmir, when the Hizb-ul-Mujahideen kidnapped him from his place of work and after seven days, terminated him.”
The actress revealed the heartbreaking motive behind her father’s murder, stating that the terrorists had made “ridiculous demands” for the release of certain individuals, demands that Major Bhupinder Singh, steadfast in his duty, refused to concede.
“He was just 44 when he died,” Nimrat Kaur said, recalling the aftermath. “We got the news and flew back with his body to Delhi and I saw his body for the first time only in Delhi. We then moved to Noida and lived with my nana-nani for a few months before my mother bought her own place (with my father’s pension money and our savings) and we moved out.”
Following his martyrdom, the government honored Major Bhupinder Singh’s courage posthumously with the Shaurya Chakra, a prestigious Indian gallantry award. The family was also allotted land in Rajasthan.
Nimrat Kaur, who was last seen in the film Sky Force alongside Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya, and Sara Ali Khan,’s personal story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the families of India’s armed forces in the face of terrorism.

My heart aches for actress Nimrit Kaur who’s father was murdered for his faith by Islamist Jihadist terrorists backed by Pakistan. Of note, when we Hindu Americans in California expressed our outrage and anguish to Senator Alex Padilla about the April 22nd, 2025 massacre of 26 Hindus in Pahalgam, India on April 22nd 2025— by Islamist groups supported by Pakistan — his office responded not with condolences nor sympathy, or even polite acknowledgment of our concerns. No! Senator Padilla responded with boilerplate text about his concerns about false narratives alleging religious freedom issues in India, only mentioning events and issues from nearly 6 years ago. Today, let Senator Padilla know what you think about his entirely unacceptable response to this horrific tragedy.
You can participate in this campaign and demand an apology, even if you didn’t previously contact Senator Padilla through our Kashmir VoterVoice Campaign.
