Vicky Kaushal On Deleted Lezim Scene: It Was an Opportunity To Promote Marathi Culture
MUMBAI, (ANI) – Actor Vicky Kaushal has addressed the removal of a dance scene from his upcoming film Chhaava, clarifying that it was originally included to celebrate Marathi culture, not to offend anyone.
Chhaava, a period drama, tells the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the valiant Maratha ruler. The film, set to release on February 14, depicts his reign starting from his coronation in 1681.
A recently deleted scene featured Kaushal’s character performing Lezim, a traditional Maharashtrian folk dance. The decision to remove it came after objections from politicians, including Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant.
Speaking to the media in North 24 Parganas, Kaushal defended the scene, emphasizing that it was intended to showcase Marathi heritage. “The Lezim portion in the film was only about 20 to 30 seconds long, slightly longer than what was shown in the trailer. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj were known as the ‘Kings of the people.’ The sequence was meant to reflect a celebratory atmosphere.”
He further explained that Lezim is more than just a dance—it’s a sport deeply rooted in Marathi culture. “With this film, we had the chance to honor Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and take Marathi culture to a global audience. The Lezim sequence was meant to elevate both.”
However, Kaushal acknowledged public sentiment, stating that the story of Sambhaji Maharaj is more important than a dance sequence. “If people felt the scene was inappropriate, we had no hesitation in removing it. The film’s essence remains intact, and we received CBFC clearance after making the changes.”
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava will hit theaters worldwide on February 14.
