WASHINGTON, DC (ANI)- 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana has filed a request with US Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to stop his extradition to India. This follows the rejection of his review petition earlier this month by Justice Elena Kagan.
According to details published on the US Supreme Court website, Rana’s application has been distributed to the Supreme Court judges for a conference scheduled for April 4. He has renewed his plea, seeking a stay on his extradition.
“Petitioner Tahawwur Rana has renewed his Emergency Application for Stay Pending Litigation of Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus, previously addressed to Justice Kagan, and requests that the renewed application be directed to Chief Justice Roberts,” his appeal states.
Earlier this month, Justice Kagan denied Rana’s application requesting a stay on his extradition. In his appeal, Rana argued that he would not survive long enough to be tried in India due to his health conditions and other concerns.
Rana claimed that if extradited, he faces a high likelihood of torture due to his Pakistani origin, former military status, religious identity, and the nature of the charges related to the 2008 Mumbai attacks. He also cited his deteriorating health, including a 3.5 cm abdominal aortic aneurysm at risk of rupture, Parkinson’s disease with cognitive decline, and a mass suggestive of bladder cancer.
In February, former US President Donald Trump announced Rana’s extradition to India during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their bilateral meeting.
Tahawwur Rana, a Pakistani-origin businessman and former physician, is a known associate of Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, one of the main conspirators behind the November 26, 2008, Mumbai attacks. He has alleged ties with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), making his extradition a longstanding point of contention between India and the United States.
