140 Crore Indians Concerned About Hindus In Bangladesh: Modi
NEW DELHI (ANI) – During his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep concern for the security of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh. He urged for a return to normalcy in the neighboring country, following recent political upheavals.
This marks the second instance in a week where Modi has highlighted the need for safeguarding Bangladesh’s minority communities, amid changes in the country’s administration. The interim government is now led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, succeeding former premier Sheikh Hasina.
“As a neighboring country, I can understand the concern regarding whatever has happened in Bangladesh. I hope the situation there becomes normal soon,” Modi stated from the Red Fort, addressing the nation. He emphasized, “In particular, the concerns of 140 crore Indians that the security of Hindus and minorities there is ensured,” speaking in Hindi.
Modi reiterated India’s commitment to peace and prosperity in the region. “We always wish for our neighbors to walk on the path of prosperity and peace. We are committed to peace; we have a culture of peace. In the days to come, we will continue to wish well for Bangladesh in its journey towards development because we are people who think about the well-being of humankind,” he conveyed to a gathering that included envoys from several countries.
The Prime Minister first raised the issue on August 8, extending his best wishes to Yunus after his swearing-in, via a message on X.
Since Sheikh Hasina stepped down and fled to India on August 5, there have been numerous reports of attacks on the homes, businesses, and places of worship belonging to the Hindu community in various parts of Bangladesh.
