RCB’s IPL 2026 Final Run Carries Emotion Beyond Cricket
NEW DELHI -Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s return to the Indian Premier League final carries significance beyond cricket, coming a year after the franchise’s maiden IPL title celebrations in Bengaluru ended in tragedy.
RCB secured a place in the IPL 2026 final after topping the league stage and defeating the Gujarat Titans in the playoffs. Leading the campaign is Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Virat Kohli, who has scored 600 runs in 15 matches this season, including a century and four half-centuries.
At 37, the former India captain continues to remain the central figure of the franchise, having represented RCB since the IPL began in 2008.
But this season has also revived memories of the events that followed RCB’s first IPL title victory in 2025.
Following the team’s title-winning celebrations in Bengaluru last year, a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in the deaths of fans who had gathered to celebrate the historic victory.
The incident deeply affected the city and RCB supporters, giving this year’s final added emotional significance for the franchise and its fan base.
For years, RCB had developed a reputation for falling short despite reaching the IPL finals in 2009, 2011 and 2016. The 2025 title ended an 18-year wait for the trophy and marked a major moment for one of the league’s most loyal fan bases.
Kohli’s long association with the franchise has also strengthened RCB’s popularity among cricket followers worldwide, including Indian-origin communities in the United States who closely follow the IPL.
As RCB prepare for another IPL final, the campaign is being viewed by many supporters not only as a title defense but also as a tribute to fans whose celebrations during last year’s victory turned tragic.
If the Bengaluru franchise wins the title again, the victory is expected to carry emotional significance for supporters who have stood by the team through years of disappointment, triumph and loss. (IANS)
