New York, New Jersey Recognize India Independence Day With State Proclamations

NEW YORK, NY – The states of New York and New Jersey have both proclaimed August 15, 2026, as India Independence Day, recognizing the contributions of Indian Americans and the longstanding relationship between India and the United States as India prepares to mark its 80th Independence Day.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has declared August 15 as “India Independence Day” across the state. The Consulate General of India in New York, posted the proclamation which recognizes India’s journey to independence and the democratic values shared by India and the United States.

The proclamation also acknowledges the contributions of Indian Americans to New York’s cultural, economic and civic life. It recalls India’s freedom movement and its emphasis on nonviolence, truth, self-discipline and moral courage, while noting that Independence Day celebrations in the United States provide opportunities to promote cross-cultural harmony across generations.

New Jersey has issued a separate proclamation, with Governor Mikie Sherrill designating August 15 as “Indian Independence Day.”

The New Jersey proclamation recognizes the contributions of Indian Americans in education, healthcare, research, technology, business, public service and community leadership. It also highlights the enduring friendship between India and the United States and their growing partnership in education, commerce, technology, healthcare and cultural exchange.

The proclamation pays tribute to those who participated in India’s peaceful freedom movement, saying their efforts inspired generations around the world and upheld the ideals of justice, equality and human dignity.
