WASHINGTON DC- On January 12, President Joe Biden conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction on Pope Francis, recognizing the pontiff’s profound influence and global contributions. The honor comes just days before Biden’s term as president concludes.
Biden expressed his deep admiration for the Pope, calling him the “People’s Pope” in a heartfelt tribute. “Pope Francis, your humility and grace are beyond words, and your love for all is unparalleled. As the People’s Pope, you are a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world,” Biden shared in a social media post.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, awarded to individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.” Notably, this marks the first time Biden has awarded the medal with distinction during his presidency.
While Biden initially planned to travel to Rome to personally bestow the honor, the trip was canceled due to ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. The planned visit would have also included a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as part of Biden’s final foreign trip as president.
Biden and Pope Francis last met in June during the G7 summit in Italy and previously in October 2021 amid discussions within the U.S. Catholic Church about Biden’s eligibility to receive communion due to his pro-choice stance on abortion rights. Biden, the second Catholic president in U.S. history, has consistently expressed admiration for Pope Francis and his message of inclusivity and compassion.
