Delhi Reaffirms Support For ‘Democratic, Inclusive’ Bangladesh After BNP Win
NEW DELHI- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13 held a telephonic conversation with BNP chairman Tarique Rehman, congratulating him on his party’s victory in the Bangladesh elections. Modi also expressed India’s support for Rehman’s efforts to fulfil the aspirations of the people of Bangladesh.
Roy welcomed the gesture by the Indian Prime Minister.
“I congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accepting the democratic process and recognizing the elected government. It is a normal diplomatic practice to congratulate the winning party. This reflects political culture and mutual respect. We appreciate this gesture,” he said.
Roy said the BNP’s primary focus would be on fulfilling its commitments to the people of Bangladesh.
“We presented 31 commitments to the people. After forming the government, it is our responsibility to gradually implement these reforms. These reforms cover various sectors, including education, health, sports, culture, development, law, justice, and the rule of law. We have many programs planned. However, I do not believe everything can be achieved in a day, a week, or even a month. We must implement them step by step and demonstrate our sincerity. It is a huge task, but we are committed to fulfilling it.”
Tarique is the son of former Bangladeshi President Gen. Ziaur Rahman, who rose to power following a series of coups and counter-coups and later founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party before assuming the presidency in 1977.
His mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, governed Bangladesh during two separate tenures from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006.
Following Khaleda Zia’s death in December last year, Tarique assumed leadership of the BNP and is now set to lead the nation.
Modi also posted, “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” the Prime Minister added.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its alliance have claimed a decisive victory in the 13th parliamentary elections.
Citing party sources, Bangladeshi Bengali daily ‘Jugantor’ reported that party chairman Tarique Rahman is set to lead the government, marking the return of a male Prime Minister in Bangladesh after almost 35 years.(IANS)
