NEW DELHI – Opposition parties on April 23 criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi after U.S. President Donald Trump reshared content describing India as a “hellhole,” prompting a political controversy.

The post, shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform, featured a podcast by American commentator Michael Savage discussing immigration and U.S. birthright citizenship. In the podcast, Savage referred to India and China as “hellholes” and made broader remarks about immigration and loyalty.

The repost drew criticism from opposition leaders, who accused Modi of not responding strongly.

The Congress party called the remarks “extremely insulting and anti-India” and urged the Prime Minister to raise the matter with Trump and register a strong objection.

The party also said Trump had made critical remarks about India in the past and alleged that Modi had remained silent.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra also criticized the Prime Minister on X. Referring to the remarks in the shared content, she questioned whether Modi would protest or continue campaigning in West Bengal.

The controversy came as West Bengal votes in its Assembly election, with further polling scheduled for April 29 and counting due on May 4.
