Trust Mattered More, Amitabh, Raaj Kumar Signed Films Without Scripts

MUMBA I-Veteran filmmaker K.C. Bokadia has recalled an earlier era in Hindi cinema when leading actors placed immense trust in filmmakers, saying legends like Amitabh Bachchan and Raaj Kumar agreed to work with him without hearing scripts.

Recounting his first meeting with actor Amitabh Bachchan, Bokadia said he approached the star with only an idea and confidence. “I greeted him and simply asked if he would do my film. He asked me to quote my price, and when we finalized the signing amount, I honestly told him that I was making my first film, with no director and no subject ready,” Bokadia said, adding that Bachchan still agreed to come on board, trusting him.

He said it was Bachchan’s faith that eventually pushed him into direction. “When things didn’t work out with other directors, I asked him if I could direct the film myself. He said yes, and that’s how I became a director,” Bokadia said.

Bokadia also recalled a similar instance with actor Raaj Kumar. “I was told he had agreed the previous evening, and the very next morning he arrived, fully prepared at the muhurat of the movie, without even hearing the story,” he said.

Citing these examples, Bokadia said such gestures reflected the level of trust and commitment actors had towards filmmakers at the time.

The filmmaker said this belief played a key role in shaping his career, which went on to include films such as ‘Aaj Ka Arjun’, ‘Phool Bane Angaray’, and ‘Police Aur Mujrim’.

Reflecting on his journey, Bokadia said the industry was defined by trust and mutual respect. “People didn’t need long narrations. There was belief, there was respect, and that was enough to begin something meaningful,” he said.
