MUMBAI – The Tata Group is collaborating with Somerville College, University of Oxford, to construct the Ratan Tata Building, with work expected to begin in spring 2025. This new facility aims to enhance teaching and learning environments, foster research initiatives, and reflect the college’s vision of a sustainable and progressive academic community.
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, emphasized that this partnership aligns with Tata’s vision for India, where research and critical inquiry are integral to development and prosperity. He stated, “This building will be a home to research that is necessary and urgent for India.”
Baroness Royall, Principal of Somerville College, remarked on the decade of discussions and shared aspirations that led to this project. She noted that the building would serve the college’s current and future needs while embodying its values, ultimately standing as a lasting legacy to Ratan Tata, a cherished friend of the institution.
The decision to name the building in Tata’s honor reflects his lifelong commitment to philanthropy and humanitarian efforts. Following his recent passing, the tribute has gained even deeper significance.
The new building will also house the Oxford India Centre for Sustainable Development (OICSD), reinforcing the strong ties between Oxford and India. The OICSD’s mission aligns closely with Tata’s values and represents a unique partnership dedicated to world-class scholarship and transformative research.
