MIAMI, FL – The American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) is mourning the sudden passing of Dr. Sampat Shivangi, a revered physician, community leader, and long-time member.

“We are deeply saddened by Dr. Shivangi’s passing. He was a dedicated physician and influential Indian American leader,” said AAPI president Dr. Satheesh Kathula.

Shivangi passed away on February 10 following a brain hemorrhage. His legacy includes his work in medicine, public health, and fostering Indo-American relations. His philanthropic efforts continue through the Dr. Sampat Shivangi Foundation, which focuses on education, healthcare, mental health, tribal support, and women’s empowerment.

In Mississippi, Dr. Shivangi helped build a Hindu temple in Jackson, and a street there has been named in his honor.

Dr. Sunil Kaza, chair of AAPI’s Board of Trustees, praised his leadership: “Dr. Shivangi’s contributions to AAPI and the Indian Diaspora were immeasurable.”

Shivangi also led AAPI’s annual Legislative Day, where he brought key U.S. lawmakers to engage with the community.

Dr. Amit Chakrabarty, AAPI’s president-elect, highlighted his far-reaching impact: “Dr. Shivangi’s philanthropy touched many lives, and his work will resonate for generations.”

Shivangi was instrumental in securing AAPI’s first U.S. Congressional grant to study diabetes in Indian Americans.

Just a month before his passing, Indian President Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Dr. Sampat Kumar S. Shivangi Cancer Hospital in Belagavi, Karnataka, funded by Dr. Shivangi’s donations.

Dr. Shivangi is survived by his wife, Dr. Udaya S. Shivangi, and their two daughters, Priya and Pooja.
