NEW DELHI (ANI) – A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation, led by Congressman Michael McCaul and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is currently visiting India to discuss issues related to Tibet. On June 19, they met with Prime Minister Modi. Prior to this, the delegation had met with the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, at his residence in Dharamshala.

The delegation includes Representatives Gregory Meeks, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Nicole Malliotakis, Ami Bera, and Jim McGovern. They also met with External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra. Jaishankar expressed appreciation for their “strong and continued” support for the strategic partnership between India and the U.S.

During the visit, Representative McCaul presented the Dalai Lama with a framed copy of ‘The Resolve Tibet Act’, a bipartisan bill passed by the U.S. Congress to enhance U.S. support for Tibet. This bill urges Beijing to re-engage with the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders to peacefully resolve the dispute over Tibet’s status and governance.

Before meeting the Dalai Lama, the U.S. delegates attended a public felicitation program at the main Tibetan temple. Children performed and showcased Tibetan culture at the ceremony held in the courtyard of the Tsuglagkhang Complex in Dharamshala. At the end of the meeting, the Dalai Lama presented Pelosi with a Buddha statue.

On June 20, Pelosi “strongly reaffirmed” Congressional support for the people of Tibet. The U.S. House of Representatives had recently passed the ‘Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act’, also known as the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, which now awaits President Joe Biden’s signature to become law.
