Amaal Mallik Cuts Family Ties, Opens Up About Battle With Depression

MUMBAI – Music composer Amaal Mallik, known for hits like Kar Gayi Chull and Jab Tak, shocked fans on March 20 with an emotional Instagram post revealing his struggle with clinical depression and his strained family relationships.

Amaal, the elder son of musician Daboo Malik and nephew of singer Anu Malik, also blamed his parents for creating distance between him and his brother, singer Armaan Malik.

“I’ve reached a point where I can no longer keep silent about the pain I’ve endured. For years, I’ve been made to feel like I am less, despite working tirelessly to build a secure life for my loved ones. I have poured my blood, sweat, and tears into creating 126 melodies over the past decade, only to be questioned and spoken down to,” he wrote.

He expressed how he and his brother worked hard to establish their own identity in the music industry, moving beyond being known as someone’s son or nephew. However, he said their parents’ actions have created a rift between them, leaving him deeply scarred.

Amaal announced that he is cutting all personal ties with his family, keeping only professional interactions.

“For years, they have undermined my well-being, belittled my friendships, relationships, and self-confidence. I kept marching on, but today, I stand emotionally drained and robbed of my peace. What truly matters is that I am clinically depressed due to these events,” he stated.

“With a heavy heart, I announce that I am stepping away from these personal ties. This isn’t a decision made in anger, but one born from the necessity to heal and reclaim my life. I refuse to let the past rob me of my future any longer,” he added.

Following his post, several industry colleagues, including singer Lisa Mishra and composer Rochak Kohli, extended their support in the comments.

Amaal Mallik made his Bollywood debut as a composer in 2014 with Jai Ho.
