WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA) defended his vote to censure Rep. Al Green (D-TX) on March 9, calling Green’s disruption during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress a “distraction” from the Democratic Party’s focused strategy.
In an interview on NewsNation’s The Hill Sunday, Bera addressed questions about Democrats who argue that since the president “won’t play by the rules,” Democrats shouldn’t either.
Bera disagreed, stating, “I’d say we need radical civility. We need to stand up for the American people.” He emphasized the need for discipline, saying, “I’m all about protecting Medicaid, but what Al did became a distraction. Our caucus can’t afford to be a distraction.”
He continued, “We know every vulnerable Republican and how many Medicaid recipients are in their districts. If Donald Trump, Elon Musk, or congressional Republicans cut Medicaid, we’ll make sure their constituents know who did it.”
Bera concluded, “That’s the strategy. That’s what we should be doing. Let’s not be a distraction.”
