Amidst Frosty Relations Modi Meets Trudeau; Gets Facetime With Biden At G7
BARI (ANI) – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 14 met a host of world leaders, including US President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on the sidelines of the G7 Summit here in Italy.
“It’s always a pleasure to meet @POTUS @JoeBiden. India and USA will keep working together to further global good,” Modi posted along with some photographs of their interaction.
He also met Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau.
This was their first face-to-face meeting after Trudeau had said openly that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of a Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last year. Canada has arrested four Indian nationals in connection with the case.
While Trudeau’s social media did not carry images of Modi, the Indian Prime Minister posted a picture from the meeting and wrote “Met Canadian PM @JustinTrudeau at the G7 Summit.”
Trudeau meanwhile said it is important to engage with partners across the world, even as Ottawa continues to highlight “challenges” for the rule of law. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the summit on June 15, where he was asked about Modi. “We need to engage with a broad range of partners and that’s exactly what we did during the Outreach session,” he added.
The Canadian PM further said there are some “important but sensitive” issues that the two countries need to work on together. He, however, refused to share many details of what the two leaders discussed.
“I think you can understand I’m not going to get into the details of this issue. There are important but sensitive issues that we need to follow up on. But this was a commitment to work together in the coming times to deal with some very important issues,” he said.
