CUPERTINO, CA –  Apple is strengthening its relationship with India by bringing Tata Group on board to manage repairs for iPhones and MacBooks, underscoring the Indian conglomerate’s growing role in the tech giant’s global supply chain.

Two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Tata will take over after-sales servicing responsibilities from ICT Service Management Solutions, the Indian unit of Taiwan’s Wistron. The transition, already underway, will be centered at Tata’s iPhone assembly facility in Karnataka.

The move marks a significant expansion of Tata’s partnership with Apple. Tata already assembles iPhones and manufactures some components as the U.S. firm diversifies its production base away from China.

India has quickly become a key growth market for Apple. iPhone sales reached a record 11 million units in 2023, up from a 1% market share in 2020 to 7% now, according to Counterpoint Research. As sales rise, so does the demand for efficient, localized repair services.

While Apple’s authorized service centers in India handle basic fixes, more complex repairs will now be routed to Tata’s facility. Wistron’s ICT will continue servicing other clients but will exit Apple-related operations, Reuters said.

The shift also aligns with broader geopolitical and economic trends. With U.S.-China trade tensions looming—highlighted by tariff threats from President Donald Trump—India is emerging as a preferred destination for Apple’s manufacturing and export needs. Apple CEO Tim Cook has been under pressure with Trump also demanding that he move things to America and not focus on India.
