April 2 Tariffs: US Trade Officials To Visit India For Talks
India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI – A delegation of U.S. trade officials will visit India from March 25-29 for trade discussions, according to a U.S. embassy spokesperson on March 24. The group will be led by Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for South and Central Asia, Brendan Lynch.
“This visit reflects the United States’ continued commitment to advancing a productive and balanced trade relationship with India,” the spokesperson said.
With President Donald Trump expected to impose reciprocal tariffs on various nations starting April 2, concerns have risen among Indian exporters. Reuters reported that India hopes to be exempt from these tariffs, as negotiations on a bilateral trade pact between the two countries continue.
A government source confirmed that Vice President J.D. Vance may also visit India in April.
Reuters noted that several industry groups have raised concerns, warning that reducing tariffs on industrial products under U.S. pressure could lead to an influx of cheaper Chinese goods, potentially harming domestic Indian manufacturers.
Earlier this month, India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal spent nearly a week in the United States for trade talks, and according to various media reports did not make much headway with the Trump administration despite trying to placate it.
