California’s Boomitra Partners With EID Parry For Sustainable Sugarcane Farming In India
India-West Staff Reporter
SAN MATEO, CA — Boomitra, a leader in soil carbon markets and a recipient of the 2023 Earthshot Prize, has joined forces with EID Parry, one of India’s major integrated sugar producers, to transform sugarcane farming in the country through regenerative agricultural practices. The partnership aims to equip over 150,000 farmers with the tools needed to improve soil health, conserve water, and access carbon finance, in line with India’s agricultural sustainability goals.
With Boomitra’s expertise in soil carbon projects and EID Parry’s extensive network of farmers, the collaboration targets improving the quality of soil in sugarcane fields, while also creating new income opportunities. EID Parry has long been committed to sustainable farming through initiatives focused on soil health and water conservation, and this partnership expands its efforts with a focus on regenerative practices like reduced tillage, residue management, organic mulching, and efficient irrigation techniques.
“India’s sugarcane industry faces significant challenges such as soil degradation and water scarcity. Through this collaboration, we aim to enhance soil health and create lasting benefits for farmers while addressing climate change,” said Aadith Moorthy, CEO of Boomitra, which uses AI and remote sensing technology to measure and verify soil carbon sequestration.
The integration of Boomitra’s advanced AI-driven platform with EID Parry’s reach will allow farmers to participate in carbon markets by earning carbon credits for improving soil organic carbon levels. This enables farmers, including smallholders with just one-acre plots, to generate income from sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and their livelihoods.
Muthu Murugappan, CEO of EID Parry, emphasized the company’s long-standing commitment to sustainable farming practices. “By leveraging Boomitra’s cutting-edge technology and our expertise in sugarcane farming, this partnership is an opportunity to set new benchmarks in agriculture, improving both farmer welfare and environmental resilience,” he said.
Boomitra’s innovative approach to carbon measurement and certification provides farmers with a cost-effective way to access carbon finance, supporting them financially and incentivizing the adoption of practices that restore soil health. The revenue from carbon credits, verified through third-party certification, is returned to farmers, allowing them to reinvest in their land and further improve their agricultural practices.
This collaboration is poised to create a more resilient and sustainable sugarcane farming system in India, addressing climate change while boosting productivity and economic stability for farmers.
Boomitra, a global player in soil carbon projects, has already supported over 100,000 farmers across five million acres globally, removing 10 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. EID Parry, part of a 235-year-old legacy, operates six sugar factories and is expanding into FMCG products like millets and rice while working towards renewable energy goals through its ethanol production.
