Clean Energy Transition: India Scouting For Lithium In Argentina
India-West News Desk
NEW DELHI – India is ramping up its investments in Argentina’s mining, oil, and gas sectors, with a primary focus on lithium, to support its energy transition.
Indian companies, including state-owned Khanij Bidesh India Ltd (KABIL), Coal India, and private firm Greenko, are already exploring lithium deposits in the Catamarca province, near the Chilean border. According to Reuters, Indian officials plan to expand exploration into neighboring provinces like Salta, with further developments expected in the next six months.
As a major emitter of greenhouse gases, India is securing critical minerals in resource-rich countries such as Argentina, Chile, and Australia to support its clean energy goals. The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has identified 30 key minerals, including lithium, to facilitate the country’s energy transition.
Argentina is the world’s fourth-largest lithium exporter and is part of the “lithium triangle” along with Chile and Bolivia, making it a strategic partner in India’s pursuit of these vital resources.
