LONDON – David Beckham will be knighted next week, marking a crowning moment in the former footballer’s career and decades-long public life. The honor will be officially announced in King Charles III’s upcoming birthday honors list, elevating Beckham from an OBE to “Sir David” — and conferring the title of “Lady Beckham” on his wife, Victoria.

Best known for his illustrious years at Manchester United, where he played from 1992 to 2003, Beckham won the Champions League, multiple Premier League titles, and a host of domestic trophies. He later starred for global clubs including Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. Beckham also earned 115 caps for England, many as captain, and became one of the most recognized athletes of his generation.

Having recently celebrated his 50th birthday, Beckham’s knighthood recognizes not just a legendary football career but also his ongoing contributions to public life, charity, and now, the monarchy.

After years of public calls for the knighthood, Beckham’s relationship with the monarchy has grown notably closer in recent years — particularly with King Charles. Last year, Charles appointed Beckham as an ambassador to his charitable organization, The King’s Foundation.

Beckham has joined the King and Queen Camilla on several public occasions and invited to the Buckingham Palace state banquet for the Emir of Qatar in December, a sign of his increasing presence in royal circles.
