MUMBAI, (ANI) – Deepika Padukone opened up about her battle with depression during a session at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha 2025’ program on February 12. She candidly shared how the condition, despite being invisible, deeply affected her, leaving her feeling hopeless and at times unwilling to live.

The actress, known for her openness about mental health, recalled the moment she realized she was struggling with depression. “After school, I was involved in sports, modeling, and acting. I was working nonstop. One day in 2014, I passed out. A few days later, I realized I had depression. It’s invisible, and people often don’t realize that someone might be struggling, as I was smiling and greeting everyone,” she shared.

Deepika explained how her mother noticed her distress during a visit to Mumbai and insisted she see a psychologist. “My mom stayed with me in Mumbai, and on the day she was leaving, I started crying. When they asked if something had happened at work, I said, ‘I don’t know what this is, but I feel completely hopeless and just don’t want to live.’ I was lucky my mother recognized it and called a psychologist,” Deepika recalled.

She emphasized the stigma surrounding mental health in India and how speaking out made her feel lighter and freer. “Once I started talking about my illness, I felt free. From there, my journey on mental health awareness began,” she said.

Deepika founded the LiveLoveLaugh foundation in 2015, aiming to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health.

During the event, she also shared strategies to manage exam stress. “Focus on what’s in your control, like whether you’re prepared. Talk to your parents or teachers about your stress. Expressing it can help,” she advised students.

Reflecting on her own school days, Deepika emphasized the importance of recognizing children’s potential beyond grades, encouraging parents to support their children’s passions.

To live a stress-free life, she recommended adequate sleep, fresh air, and reaching out for help. “Sleep is a superpower. It’s free and crucial for mental health,” Deepika concluded, also reminding students to practice patience during exams.
